What is the Food and Agriculture Organization?
The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), established in October 1945 and headquartered in Rome, leads international efforts to defeat hunger by promoting sustainable agricultural development, food security, and natural resource management. Water plays a central role in FAO’s mission, as it is essential for all stages of food production. Facing increasing demand and climate-related pressures, the FAO supports member countries in improving irrigation efficiency, rainwater harvesting, safe wastewater reuse, and integrated water resources management. It also works to strengthen water governance to ensure food security, equitable access, and the protection of ecosystems.
