As a laboratory of ideas, UNESCO seeks to strengthen ties between nations, in particular through the sharing of knowledge and the free flow of ideas.

Its programmes contribute to achieving the sustainable development goals set out in Agenda 2030.

Working for UNESCO for many years, during which time he has provided Member States with improved knowledge, capacity, policy advice, methodologies and tools to address water-related disasters, hydrological changes and the challenges of water scarcity, Mr Abou AMANI is now Director of the Division of Water Sciences and Secretary of UNESCO’s Intergovernmental Hydrological Programme.

He was previously Regional Hydrologist in Niamey for more than eight years and also worked for three years for the Institut de Recherche pour le Développement (IRD) as a researcher and visiting scientist.

Member and contributor to various committees, initiatives and expert groups, including the World Water Council, Mr Abou AMANI is a civil engineer who graduated from the Ecole de Polytechnique de Thiès in Senegal. He also holds a doctorate from the École Polytechnique de Montréal in Canada.
