The International Water Resources Association (IWRA), in collaboration with Korea Water Resources Corporation (K-Water) and the Asia Water Council (AWC), has released a comprehensive report on the Smart Water Cities project—a three-year initiative (July 2020 – December 2023) dedicated to analysing smart water technologies in urban developments.
The report presents key performance indicators, evaluation methodologies, and insights from phase two of the project’s pilot city assessments in Busan Eco Delta City (Korea) and Semarang (Indonesia).
A key outcome of the project is the Smart Water City Index, a practical tool for assessing urban water management performance. Findings from the pilot city evaluations highlight the need for integrated smart water technologies, strong governance frameworks, and cross-sector collaboration to enhance resilience and sustainability.
Key recommendations from the report emphasise data-driven decision-making, adaptive policies, and stakeholder engagement as essential strategies to help cities future-proof their water infrastructure in the face of increasing climate challenges.
Building on these insights, IWRA is currently exploring new partnerships to expand the project and conduct further pilot city assessments to refine and enhance the Smart Water City Index.
