The Caledon-Mohokare River, a key tributary of the Orange-Senqu River in Southern Africa, is vital for agriculture, drinking water, and ecosystems. However, pollution threatens its sustainability. Studies like the Orange-Senqu River Transboundary Diagnostic Analysis highlight declining water quality. To address this, the Orange-Senqu River Commission (ORASECOM) partnered with Lesotho’s Department of Water Affairs (DWA) to enhance monitoring and combat pollution.
ORASECOM launched a Citizen Science initiative, engaging schoolchildren in water quality monitoring. A pilot program in 10 Lesotho primary schools trains students to assess river health using aquatic macroinvertebrates and physical indicators. Ms. Nthati Toae, DWA Water Quality Officer, stated: “This knowledge safeguards communities and the water resource itself. By identifying problems early, people will be more conscious about how they treat water and the environment.”

Citizen Science is now part of Lesotho’s national water quality monitoring program. School assessments are included in the State of River Health Report. ORASECOM and DWA are expanding the program by training more community members across Lesotho. This initiative not only protects the Caledon-Mohokare River but also cultivates future environmental stewards, ensuring sustainable water management for generations. By engaging communities and young minds, the program empowers citizens to take an active role in safeguarding their environment, fostering a culture of conservation and responsibility.
