As part of the implementation of the Peer-to-Peer (P2P) project, the International Network of Basin Organisations (INBO) is continuing its series of interviews, ‘P2P – Field Perspectives from the Peers’, which highlights the partners involved in the project.

Funded by the European Union through the Directorate-General for International Partnerships (DG INTPA), the Peer-to-Peer project is the first programme under the Twin Basin Initiative, led by INBO with the support of the African Network of Basin Organisations (ANBO). This project aims to strengthen integrated and sustainable water resources management (IWRM) through peer-to-peer cooperation, the sharing of experiences and the development of the capacities of basin organisations around the world.

Now in its operational phase, the project is based on 21 pairings bringing together national or transboundary river basin organisations, public administrations, academic institutions and scientific partners from Africa, Latin America, Europe and Asia. The common objective of these partnerships is to learn from one another and strengthen capacities and practices in river basin management.

As part of this, the ‘P2P – Field Perspectives from the Peers’ series gives a voice to the key stakeholders involved in these initiatives.

The role of the European Commission

This new episode features the European Commission through a contribution from Ms Marjeta Jager, Deputy Director-General of DG INTPA, recorded during the INBO World Basin Summit, which took place in June 2026 in Rio de Janeiro (Brazil).

Ms Marjeta Jager emphasises that sustainable water management is a priority for the European Union in its international partnerships. Faced with challenges that cut across development, energy, resilience and poverty reduction, she emphasises the importance of an integrated approach at the river basin level. In this context, peer-to-peer cooperation helps to harness the expertise of water sector stakeholders, share experiences and build the capacity of institutions in a sustainable manner.
